IELTS / TOEFL / PTE / Duolingo to CEFR level
Many German Master’s programmes ask for English at B2 or C1. This tool uses only the test makers’ own tables. Where a table gives no level for a score, the tool says so.

IELTS rows come from ielts.org (B2 and C1 from its CEFR article; 8.5 = C2 and 4.5–5 = B1 from its IELTS/TOEFL/CEFR table, whose lowest cell is “0-4” with no level). Duolingo ranges are quoted from the official Duolingo English Test blog. Many German universities do not accept Duolingo; check your programme.
TOEFL 0–120 ranges come from ETS’s table that aligns the old scale with the new 1–6 scale (January 2026).
Frequently asked questions
Which IELTS score equals CEFR B2?
IELTS states that a score of 5.5 to 6.5 is equivalent to CEFR level B2, and 7 to 8 corresponds to C1. The full quote and link are in the Sources box on this page.
Which PTE Academic score equals B2 or C1?
Pearson lists PTE Academic 59-75 as CEFR B2 and 76-84 as C1.
How does the new TOEFL 1-6 scale map to CEFR?
ETS maps band 4 and 4.5 to B2, 5 and 5.5 to C1, and 6 to C2 on the updated 1-6 scale introduced in January 2026.
