Student cost of living in Germany
Rent, food, health insurance, clothing, transport and the semester contribution per month. City rents are shown only where a Studierendenwerk or DAAD page states a figure. For any other city, type the rent you found.
No official source gives student rents for every German city. Hall (Studierendenwerk) rents have waiting lists; private rooms usually cost more. The semester contribution is set by each university, so type yours. Exchange rates change daily, so no rate is preset.
National averages (DSW survey, via DAAD)
| Item | € per month |
|---|---|
| Rent | 410 |
| Food | 198 |
| Clothing | 46 |
| Transport | 89 |
| Health | 100 |
DAAD says 900 to 1,200 euros a month is the usual total. The health figure in the survey (100) is lower than a 2026 statutory student rate (TK: €141.16 under 23, €146.29 from 23 without a child), so the calculator uses the TK rate.
